McEachin Proposes Legislative Reform to For-Profit Student Loan Industry

Affordable college education should be the right of every Virginian – and is the dream of every American family.

Unfortunately, too often corporate greed and corporate malfeasance on the part of for-profit loan corporations like Sallie Mae that lend money to our students have gotten in the way of this aspiration.

As you may recall, my opponent, Benjamin Lambert acknowledged contributing $1000 to conservative Republican Congressman Buck McKeon. It is disturbing, and perhaps very telling, that this is the same Congressman McKeon who was the leader in the fight OPPOSING successful Democratic efforts that would cut student loan rates in half. (Washington Post, 1/17/07).

Republican Congressman McKeon, Mr. Lambert and his fellow members on Sallie Mae’s Board of Directors may believe higher rates on student loans are acceptable, but students and their families know otherwise.

Just as distressing as Sallie Mae’s determination to keep their profits high by keeping student loan rates high, are the unethical business practices in which Sallie Mae has engaged while my opponent has been part of their leadership, serving as a member of their Board.

In New York, Attorney General Cuomo has forced Sallie Mae to enter into an agreement that has made the company stop practicing egregious business practices including bribery, kickbacks, and collusion. (Washington Post, 4/12/07)

Del. McEachin is a “Stalwart Supporter of Public Education and Virginia Students”

Richmond—The Virginia Education Association has announced its strong support and endorsement for Delegate Donald McEachin in his campaign to be the Democratic nominee for the Ninth Senatorial District. Delegate McEachin today expressed his gratitude and appreciation for the VEA endorsement.

“One of our most important responsibilities as public servants is to support public education. We need to ensure that our students and teachers get the resources and help they need and deserve. We want to ensure our children have a top notch twenty-first century education and for that to happen, we need to be their strongest backers,“ Delegate McEachin said.

McEachin Reports Over 200 Donors in One Month; Humbled by Widespread Support

Richmond—Delegate A. Donald McEachin (D-Henrico) today announced that he had reported contributions of over $55,000, contributed by over 200 donors, in the one month since the General Assembly Session ended and he announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for the Ninth Senatorial District.

Delegate McEachin said today, “I am honored and humbled by this widespread demonstration of support from throughout the district. This is yet another example that the voters in the district want change. Over 200 donors have made a financial commitment to elect someone with Democratic values and vision for the Ninth Senatorial District.

“With little over a month to raise funds, we exceeded our goal for the last thirty days. I reached out and asked the voters to make this campaign viable and they did. I will be forever grateful for this support. I promise to do my best to live up to the confidence placed in me by the many contributors. I will continue to work hard, to raise the funds necessary to get our message out, so that, come Primary Day on June 12, the Democrats of the Ninth Senatorial District will have a standard bearer who represents their values and fights for their causes.”

Delegate McEachin Responds to Sen. Lambert's Refusal to debate in front of Democrats

Henrico—Today Delegate A. Donald McEachin (D-Henrico), in a letter, renewed his call for debates across the 9th Senate District and questioned his opponent's refusal to debate in front of Democratic organizations.

Del. McEachin said, "I believe it is imperative that we meet before Democratic groups... This contest is for the Democratic nomination and Democrats will and should be voting for their standard-bearer. Republicans and their supporters have their own opportunity to choose their nominee."

McEachin also added, "I certainly hope your unwillingness to appear among Democrats is not because your goal is to court Republicans and encourage them to hijack the Democratic nominating process.

Delegate McEachin Calls upon Senate Opponent to Participate in Multiple Debates Across the District

Henrico—Delegate A. Donald McEachin (D-Henrico), in a letter dated April 9th, called upon Benny Lambert to engage in a series of debates around the district to showcase their views and records to Democratic voters.

Delegate McEachin said, "I encourage you to join me for a series of debates around the district. I believe it is critical that we speak in front of Democratic organizations because this is, after all, a primary to choose the Democratic standard–bearer."

Delegate McEachin continued, "I am eager to work out dates and locations at your earliest convenience. The voters deserve it."

Delegate McEachin Calls on Benny Lambert To Disclose ALL His Republican Contributions

Delegate A. Donald McEachin released a statement today in response to Benny Lambert's comments in the March 29, 2007Richmond Free Press about Lambert's newly revealed history of Republican contributions.

Delegate McEachin said, "I call on my opponent to disclose all his contributions to Republican elected officials, Republican PACS, conservative PACS, PACS that support or endorse Republicans and Republican candidates. I was very distressed to find out that Senator Lambert's dalliance with George Allen was not the first time he has actively aided and supported a prominent conservative Republican. Not only did Senator Lambert campaign with George Allen, cut a radio ad on his behalf and write an op-ed in support for him in 2006, but in 2004 he gave a generous contribution to a conservative Republican Congressman's PAC. As if those two actions were not bad enough, Senator Lambert says, in the Free Press, that 'he might have made other contributions [to Republicans].'" Delegate McEachin continued, "I ask him again to disclose, for the sake of his constituents, all his Republican contributions. They deserve no less."

Good afternoon. I am here today to announce my candidacy for the Democratic nomination for the Ninth Senatorial District. I did not come by this decision quickly or lightly.  I have enjoyed my service to my constituents in the 74th House District.  I have enjoyed my service in the Virginia House of Delegates as a leader on the issues that Virginia Democrats have used to have used to bring progress and prosperity to our great Commonwealth:  Fair wages.  Affordable health care.  Access to high quality education.  Protecting our neighborhoods.  I have worked hard in the General Assembly to stand up for these bedrock Democratic values.

Just this past year, I introduced legislation to increase the minimum wage, to mandate insurance coverage for young women and girls who choose to receive the HPV vaccination and to divest the Commonwealth from the genocide in Darfur.  I have continued my lifelong fight to keep our neighborhoods safe from the scourge of illegal guns our streets by working to reduce the proliferation of firearms.
