The Virginia state Senate passed a bill to ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation for state workers and in hiring for government jobs Monday. The bill passed on a 23 to 17 vote, but is expected to see opposition in the majority Republican state House.

State Senator Donald McEachin (D), the bill's sponsor, told the Washington Examiner "the time has come, it is the right thing to do, and this is the right time to do it."
